Steven M. Kaye ’68

Steve prepared at Woodmere Academy. Having memorized the Freshman Herald prior to arrival, he amazed his classmates by reciting — on request — their hometowns, secondary schools, and in some cases, birth dates. Soon Steve began to entertain his friends with stand-up comedy routines drawn from quirky characters in his hometown of Ozone Park, N.Y., and later from eccentric Princeton faculty and students. Steve majored in English, played junior varsity football, and ate at Cannon. His depictions of the Saturday-night “Tree vs. Troll” wrestling matches at The Gun often were requested by his undergrad cult following.

After Princeton, Steve taught high school briefly in Harlem and Brooklyn and then moved to Boston. He earned a law degree from Boston University and pursued a distinguished legal career before working at Met- Life, from which he retired in February 2009.

Steve wrote creatively and pursued stand-up comedy on an occasional basis. He appeared at boutique venues in Boston and Martha’s Vineyard, and organized and starred in talent shows in Wayland. His astonishing wit was rivaled only by his boundless generosity.

Steve is survived by his wife, Carole; their children, Michael and Emily; and his uncle, Mel Brooks. To them, the class extends sincere sympathy.
