Terrence Burke Maloney ’61

Terry Maloney died Jan. 29, 2010, in Colrain, Mass., where he built his house, raised his family, and farmed for 36 years. He was a hard-cider maker and apple grower. He founded West County Cider with his wife, Judith, in 1984. For 25 years, he worked as an emergency-room doctor, retiring in 1997.

Born in Buffalo, Terry went to Amherst High School and to Princeton on an NROTC scholarship. He majored in the Woodrow Wilson School. He rowed heavyweight crew and was a member of Cottage.

After Princeton, Terry served for four years as a lieutenant in the Marine Corps, then enrolled at UCSF Medical School. In 1968, he married Judith Cavagnaro.

They settled in western Massachusetts in 1972. In Colrain, Terry chaired the planning board and the finance committee, and served on the historical commission.

He helped found Franklin County CiderDays, a yearly gathering of hard-cider zealots. Regarded as a pioneer in reviving the art of hard-cider making, Terry gave strength and pleasure to a wide cast of characters.

He is survived by Judith and his son, Field ’97. We send our condolences to them.
