Born and raised in Baltimore, Ted graduated from Baltimore City College, where he practiced wrestling and track. With us, he rowed freshman crew, majored in chemistry, worked at WPRB, joined Court Club, Chemistry Club, and Westminster Fellowship, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

Ted returned to Baltimore to earn a medical degree at Johns Hopkins and marry his lab mate, Bevra, all in 1964. They moved together to Barnes Hospital, St. Louis University, where both interned. They then spent two years near Washington, D.C. Ted did research in endocrine and bone marrow illness and Bevra worked in rheumatology, both at the National Institutes of Health. In 1970, they were called back to serve as faculty at St. Louis University.

In 1983, they went to Wadsworth Medical Center at UCLA, Ted to serve as head of its geriatrics research center and Bevra as chief of rheumatology. Ted also became director of Veterans Affairs in osteoporosis and bone marrow programs. Ted retired as department chair in 2009 to continue working in research. He wrote many papers and 20 book chapters on his subjects. Both enjoyed all of California’s outdoor charms, from deep sea fishing to motoring country roads in his red BMW.

Ted died Feb. 16, 2026, after a long COVID-19 illness. He is survived by Bevra, their two daughters, and two grandchildren.
