Ted prepared for Princeton at Baltimore City College High School. With us he rowed freshman crew, majored in chemistry, graduated Phi Beta Kappa, dined at Court Club, and joined WPRB, Chemistry Club, and Westminster Fellowship. Ted earned a medical degree and the hand of his lab mate, Bevra Hannahs, at Johns Hopkins in 1964. It was the beginning of a lifetime medical team.

They moved together to Barnes Hospital of Washington University Medical School, St. Louis, for internship and residency, completed in 1966, then to the D.C. area for three years, where Ted worked in endocrine medicine for the National Institutes of Health, Bevra in rheumatology at Hopkins. They returned to Barnes as faculty in 1969, Ted in endocrinology and bone metabolism. In 1983, both were recruited to the UCLA School of Medicine. Ted became director of the UCLA/V.A. osteoporosis and bone disorders program and director of the Los Angeles V.A. program in 1986. Bevra became chief of rheumatology there.

They scaled back professionally after 2009 to enjoy Southern California life together: sailing, fishing, skiing, hiking, riding Ted’s red BMW thru the California hills, and especially spending time with their two grandsons.

Ted died Feb. 16, 2026, his 86th birthday, of a long COVID-related illness. He is survived by Bevra, their two daughters, two grandsons, and extended family.
