Thomas C. Hughes ’28

Body

Thomas Canby Hughes died Dec. 1, 1994, in Palmyra, Va. He and wife Mabs moved to a small nursing home there after he suffered a stroke; Mabs died in 1992. Despite the stroke, Tom took drawing classes, continued woodworking, and took long walks in the country with his dogs. He also attended several off-year reunions with his daughter, Cassandra.

Tom prepared at Choate. At Princeton, he majored in English, was a member of Ivy Club, took part in Triangle as a singer and tap dancer, and was an acrobatic cheerleader.

He worked for the Tradesmen's Natl. Bank and Trust Co. in Philadelphia, then with Scudder, Stevens, and Clark. Tom enlisted in the Naval Reserve and became a lt. commander during WWII. He was stationed at Bainbridge, Md.; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and San Juan, P.R. After the war, Tom started a business called Seacoast Products, which gathered seaweed and sold it as fertilizer. He then worked for the Philadelphia Natl. Bank, where he was promoted to a v.p.

Tom married Rebecca Brock and they had three daughters, Virginia Patterson, Rebecca Lescaze, and Cassandra, before they divorced, during the war. Tom then married Mabel "Mabs"; they were together for 40 years. There are 11 grandchildren. Tom was a loyal Princetonian and attended the 50th and 55th reunions. Classmates will miss his humor and cheerful friendship.
