Thomas Fletcher Jr. ’34
TOM FLETCHER, who retired in 1958 as a colonel and commander of the first S.A.C. Air Force base at Marsh Field, Riverside, Calif., died two days before Christmas 1992, after several severe strokes. Since last September, he had been in and out of rehab centers, skilled nursing homes, and hospitals. He had his first stroke in 1984, as he and his wife, Renee (Dixon), were preparing to attend our 50th reunion.
Renee says Tom loved living in the Tryon, N.C., area, where they moved in 1981, from Coconut Grove, Fla., where they first met. They were married in 1971. He was a member of the Tryon Rotary, the Tryon Hounds, and the Tryon and Riding Hunt Club.
In his 20 years with the Air Force, Tom ferried American troops to Europe and served as a staff officer in London, Paris, Frankfort, and Washington. He won several awards and decorations, including the Croix de Guerre.
Surviving, besides his widow, are a son and daughter of a former marriage, Evan Martin and Heidi Brooks Nichols, a sister, Mary (Mrs. Booker) Worthen, and two granddaughters. To them we offer our sincere sympathies.
