Thomas H. Dixon ’40

Upon Harry’s death March 30, 2011, Princeton president Shirley Tilghman said, “Harry Dixon was a tiger of the first stripe. He served his alma mater loyally throughout his adult life as a leader in his legendary class, as chair of the Alumni Council from 1967 to 1969, and as a trustee from 1979 to 1983. He will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and dedication to the University he loved so well.”

Harry prepared at Chestnut Hill Academy and St. George’s School. At Princeton, he majored in English and graduated with honors. He quarterbacked the varsity football team, was a member of St. Paul’s Society, Interclub Committee, and the Houseparty Committee, and served as president of Ivy Club.

During World War II, Harry served as a captain with the 3rd Army in Europe, receiving four battle stars and a Bronze Star. In 1949 he earned a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Harry’s business career was largely as a partner with Nathan Trotter & Co., a distributor of nonferrous metals.

Harry served our class as vice president and as president of the Princeton Club of Philadelphia.

He married Elizabeth Thayer in 1941. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children, W. Boulton, Thayer, G. Dallas, and Emily Hannan; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. His classmates send their deep sympathies.
