Thomas Henderson Russell Howarth ’50

Body

THE CLASS suffered a major loss when Tom Howarth died in his sleep at home in Fairhaven, N.J. on March 25, 1989, at the age of 61. Vigorous to the end, he had just returned from Geneva the night of his death.

Tom joined us from South River, N.J. High School where he was class president and a mainstay on the foot¬ball team. He had an undying love for the sport.

Majoring in S.P.I.A. at Princeton he was one of only two classmates who combined a varsity football letter with a Phi Beta Kappa key. His quiet brilliance and staunchly reliable friendship brought many successes. He was battalion commander of the Army R.O.T.C. unit, director of Whig Clio, president of the Speakers Bureau and a member of Dial Lodge.

After three years at Harvard Law School Tom joined Haight, Gardner, Poor and Havens in 1953. He rose to senior partner. His was truly a fascinating international practice, and with the same candor and integrity that won our love, he became a trusted friend of shipping magnates, Norwegian bankers, Chinese Communist offi¬cials and Taiwanese industrialists.

He and Gloria delighted in redoing their various N.J. homes over the years, working extensively with the land¬scaping and the gardening. Boating along the Jersey shore occupied many happy summer hours.

To Gloria, daughter Deidre and son Matthew, the Class extends its deepest sympathy.
