Thomas Joseph O'Connor *48, an army officer and language teacher, died Aug. 5, 1994. He was 84. Born in Brooklyn Oct. 9, 1909, he attended St. Augustine H.S. in Brooklyn and earned his B.S. from West Point in 1933. After being commissioned, he served at Governor's Island in Hawaii. He was present at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He was promoted to captain and served three and a half years in the Pacific, Australia, and the Philippines, including the Battle of Leyte. He returned to the U.S. in 1945 and studied at Princeton's dept. of politics.

Later, he transferred to Florida State Univ., where he studied Spanish. He served the army in Lima, Peru, and was named chief of military operations there. He retired in 1956. Subsequently he taught Spanish at LaSalle Military Academy and was chairman of the language dept. at William Floyd H.S. until his second retirement.

He is survived by his second wife, Mary. His first wife, Maureen, predeceased him. His survivors also include five daughters, two sons, l 5 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, two stepsons, and one step­daughter. To his extended family and all of his friends, we extend heartfelt sympathy.
