Tim died in May 1993 of heart failure, in Rohnert Park, Calif., where he had lived since 1987.

Tim was born in Baltimore. He graduated from the Lawrenceville School in 195l and entered Princeton that fall, but enlisted in the Marines from 1953-55, serving on the U.S.S. Des Moines in the Mediterranean. Though he graduated in 1958, Tim remained a member of the Class of '55.

After graduation and his marriage to Emily Hill, Tim lived in Princeton, where their three children were born. He worked as a securities broker for Hornblower & Weeks, managing the firm's Trenton office. In 1972, he was transferred to San Francisco as manager of the firm's office there. Later, he became a self-employed investment counselor.

At Princeton, Tim was in the department of modern languages and literature. A member of Tower, his roommates included Edward Seemans and Howard Prince. Tim enjoyed tennis and golf and was an avid sports fan. He was a loyal Princetonian and was proud of his Marine service.

His marriage ended in divorce in 1985. He is survived by a son, Thomas A.; two daughters, Janet L. and Elizabeth Chapman; two grandchildren; and by his brother, H. Freeman Matthews '49.
