Thomas R. Poole ’58

Tom died June 28, 2016, in Armidale, Australia, after a 10-year battle with prostate cancer.
He was a graduate of the Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady, N.Y. Tom majored in history and ate at Quadrangle Club. He was a member of Whig-Clio and the Campus Fund Drive. He was vice president his junior year and president his senior year of the International Relations Club. His senior-year roommates were Adkins, Farrin, Leslie, Rankin, and Zilkha.
He joined the Army and studied Russian at the Army language school in Monterey, Calif. He earned a master’s degree from the University of Kansas and a doctorate at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
After spotting an ad in The New York Times announcing that the University of Queensland was looking for a lecturer in Russian history, he moved to Australia. He taught at the university from 1974 until he retired in 2001. His research interests were Trotsky and Russo-Australian relations, and he wrote and edited various publications on those subjects.
In retirement he became interested in woodworking and was active in Care for Seniors, tennis, gardening, and Rotary Club.
Tom is survived by his wife of 48 years, Heidi; his daughters, Alix, Melissa, and Kim; sons-in-law; and six grandchildren. The class extends its condolences to them.

2 Years AgoAn Inspirational Lecturer
I couldn’t agree more with Alison and Bernard.
I returned to Queensland University in in my 30s in 1974, and had the good fortune to meet Tom when I selected his Russian history subjects in 1976. His lectures and tutorials were always fascinating and thought-provoking, and he was the only history lecturer I met who insisted that we have at least a reasonable grasp of the geography of our area of study. I kept in touch with Tom and Heidi for many years after graduation, but lost touch around 2015 or so, obviously when Tom became really ill. Please give Heidi and family my very belated sympathies.

7 Years AgoA Standout Lecturer
Hi, thanks for a great tribute to Tom Poole, who was our Russian history lecturer from 1979-1980 at Uni of Queensland.
He was a standout lecturer, and he brought Russian history alive for us. My husband and I were at Uni together and had just started going out. Tom was a highlight of our Uni education.
Please pass on our tribute to his family. We really admired him, enjoyed his approach and have never forgotten him.
We are now aged 57 and 60, and back then we were 18/19 and 20/21.
