Thomas Robert Wilcox ’40
DEVOTION TO Princeton and the Class of 1940 were of significant import to Tom Wilcox, who died at his Shelter Island, N.Y., home July 19, 1993. He had served on the Alumni Council, the Advisory Council of the Dept. of Economics, and the Special Gifts Committee, and had provided the energetic leadership for our 50th reunion A.G. effort.
Tom's banking career was marked by personal success, harddriving direction, and notable achievements. He spent 37 years at the First Natl. City Bank of New York to become its vicechairman and later became chairman and C.E.O. of Crocker Nail. Bank in San Francisco, where he oversaw its merger with Britain's Midland Bank. He served on the boards of many major business institutions and civic organizations, including the Nature Conservancy and the Mystic Seaport Museum.
Torn joined us from N.Y.U. in 1938. He graduated with honors in economics. Of his Princeton years, Tom once wrote, "They were the springboard to almost everything I have since accomplished." In WWII, he served in the navy. He is survived by his widow, Mary Jane; three sons, Thomas R., M. Kirby C., and Andrew McK. '73; and four grandsons. Our feelings of sympathy and loss go out to the entire Wilcox family. We will miss Tom's strength and support.
