Thomas Sangster Mutch ’23
THE CLASS OF 1923 and Princeton University lost a truly great and distinguished graduate when Tom Mutch left us for a better world on Dec. 28, 1992.
Tom was born in Scotland and came to the U.S. at the age of 12. After graduating from the Haverford School, he returned to his birthplace to serve as a private in the British Army. On his return to the U.S., Tom entered Haverford College, later transferring to Lehigh Univ. to study engineering. When he discovered his life's work, he entered our Princeton Class. He belonged to Gateway Club.
After Princeton, Tom entered McCormick Theological Seminary, graduating in 1926. In 1950, he received an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Grove City College.
The Rev. Mutch served as minister at Calvary Presbyterian Church and Third Presbyterian Church, both in Rochester, N.Y., and briefly at First Presbyterian Church in Schenectady, N.Y., before becoming the minister of the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, N.J. Tom retired in 1966, after serving his parish for 30 years.
Our classmate served as the moderator for the MorrisOrange Presbytery. He was on the New Jersey Synod Committee of Theological Education and was a trustee for the Morris County Children's Home. He was also a member of the Morristown Rotary.
Tom's wife died in 1989, his son Tom in 1980, and his daughter Patricia in 1949. His daughter Elizabeth Thomas, five grandchildren, and five greatgrandchildren survive him.
Thomas Sangster Mutch's motto was "Keep busy, one happy day at a time!" The fast fading 70th Reunion Class takes pride in Tom's great life. He died of having lived.
