Tom died peacefully Dec. 20, 2016, in Copley, Ohio. He was born June 2, 1917, in Tyrone, Pa. — the second of two sons — to Thomas Walker and Margaretta Calderwood Fisher.

An Eagle Scout, Tom prepared at Tyrone High School and Phillips Exeter Academy before entering Princeton, where he studied chemical engineering. While at Princeton Tom managed the gymnastics team and belonged to Cloister Inn. Tom’s father and brother were also Princeton graduates — Thomas W. Fisher 1901 and William C. Fisher ’30.

During World War II Tom served as a lieutenant commander in the Naval Ordnance Department. Following the war, he joined Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. and spent 34 years in various research and management roles, acquiring several patents along the way. He retired in 1980.

Tom enjoyed a long and productive retirement. He was active in his Presbyterian Church, volunteered to fill out income-tax returns for the AARP program, and traveled extensively with his wife and family. But his consuming passion during retirement was making fine furniture.

Tom is survived by his wife of nearly 73 years, Virginia; children Thomas III, Katharine Fisher Morland, and Andrew Vanneman Fisher; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
