Thomas W. Fowler IV ’72

Thomas Fowler died unexpectedly Aug. 23, 2011, from a heart attack, surrounded by his family, in Boston.

Tommy was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., grew up in Glen Cove on Long Island, attended Friends Academy, and earned a bachelor’s degree in geological engineering at Princeton.   Living in West Milford, N.J., for 27 years, Tom was an active church member and volunteer for a nursing home, prison ministries, and the Best Day Foundation, which helps children with special needs build confidence and self-esteem through outdoor adventure activities. An avid outdoorsman, Tom skied, snowshoed, swam, and recently completed a climb of Mount Washington with many family members in tow.   Tom worked in environmental engineering throughout the country and the world, including in Egypt, Poland, and Croatia, for Foster Wheeler, Tetra Tech, and, most recently, as a senior hydrogeological engineer for HDR Inc. in Pearl River, N.Y. He was the principal of his own consulting firm, Black Bear Environmental. Tom was a lifelong environmental champion.   Tom is survived by his mother, Marcia-Marie Canavello; his wife, Susan; son Tommy; daughters Elizabeth and Chelsea Rose; his brothers, Neal and Chris, and their spouses; and five nieces and nephews. To his family and many friends and admirers, the class sends its sincere condolences.
