Tom T. Wuerth ’40

Body

ARCHITECT AND DEVOTED OCEAN SAILOR Tom Wuerth, son of Gustav C. '07, died May 3, 1994, after a long diabetic-related illness. Classmates Bill Farrar and Dick Wells attended his memorial service, where Bill spoke of a long and valued friendship with Tom.

From Mercersburg and Loomis Schools, Tom majored in architecture, graduating with honors and the D'Amato Prize. He was a leading figure in the yacht club, roomed with Lindsay Smith, and enjoyed Charter Club. He rose to lt. commander in the navy aboard a minesweeper, serving in the Atlantic and Pacific.

After a series of city-planning, urban-renewal, and restoration projects in the New England area, Tom and his family settled in Guilford, Conn. He eventually closed out his career with long service on the Guilford Planning and Zoning Commission. Sailing in Edgartown waters and restoring his charming 250-year-old saltbox house were, at an earlier period, among his principal interests.

Tom's widow, Katrina, survives him, as do three sons, a daughter, two sisters, brother John '42, and five grandchildren. To all, we offer our deepest sympathy. Princeton classmates meant a great deal to Tom and he courageously and joyfully attended our last two major reunions despite his steadily deteriorating and painful physical condition.
