Waldo Earle Sweet *43

WALDO EARLE SWEET, professor of Latin, emeritus, at the Univ. of Michigan, died Sept. 15, 1992, at the age of 89, after an extended illness. The son of a faculty member at PhilipsExeter Academy, he prepared there and earned a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 1934, a master's degree in Greek from Columbia Univ. in 1935, and a Ph.D. in Greek history from Princeton. During WWII, he was involved in training U.S. mountain troops. In the course of his first 20 years of teaching, he taught Latin and coached track and skiing in several preparatory schools in New England. In 1953 he joined the faculty of the Univ. of Michigan and remained there until his retirement in 1982. He wrote or edited 13 books and more than 40 articles on the teaching of Latin and classical studies. In the early 1950s, he proposed numerous innovations in the teaching of Latin which are just now catching on. He is survived by his widow, Elizabeth, his daughters Deborah and Holly, one grandchild, a sister, and a stepsister. We extend to all his loved ones sincere condolences.
