Walter Boit Winship Jr. ’44

Body

WALTER DIED of a heart attack Mar. 6, 1993, in Harwich, Mass. He prepared for Princeton at Lawrenceville. At Princeton, he majored in English, rooming his First two years in Holder. Landon Hockmeyer (dec.) was his freshman roommate and they were joined by Don Brandin for their sophomore year. Walt's club was Cannon. He graduated in Feb. 1944 and taught English at Kimball Union Academy for five years, before entering the family textile business. With the withdrawal of the textile industry from New England, Walter moved his family to Cape Cod in 1959 and returned to teaching at the Riverview School in Sandwich. Later, he joined the Barnstable County Registry of Deeds, where he became the senior registrar until his retirement in 1987. Walt was a reserved man, blessed with a dry sense of humor and total devotion to his wife, Joan, and their children, Walter III, Mary Ellen, and Amy. To Joan, the children, and their friends go our heartfelt sympathies.
