Walter Edward Hugins ’41

Body

WALT, A PROMINENT professor of history, died of congestive heart failure June 20, 1992, in a Chico, Calif., nursing home. He had suffered several strokes five years previously and was in poor health. After a number of years at Son Jose State and the State Univ. of New York at Binghamton, he and his wife, Joann, had chosen Chico as their city of retirement.

Walt was born in Denver. He came to Princeton from a high school there, roomed with Tom Judd and Henry McClaskey, joined Court Club, and was active in Intime theatricals. He earned his masters at Columbia in 1946 and his doctorate there in 1958. He married Joann in 1950. His book JACKSON DEMOCRACY AND THE WORKING CLASS was published by Stanford Univ. in 1960. From 1972 to 1974, Walt was a Fulbright professor in Taiwan, and three years later, while on sabbatical leave, he taught and did research in Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Taiwan. His brother Bob '43 is a Peace Corps volunteer in the African country of Lesotho. it was from him that we learned of Wait's death.

In addition to Joann and Bob, Walt is survived by two sons, Peter and Christopher; two other brothers, Richard and David; two sisters, Ruth Brown and Elizabeth Ellenberger; and two grandchildren. Our deep sympathy goes out to all of them.
