Walter Haefeli Jr. ’25
WALT HAEFELI DIED in Stafford, Penn., May 12, 1994. Born in Brooklyn Feb. 12, 1904, he came to us from Pelham H.S. He was manager of the swimming and water polo teams; a member of the Life Saving Club; on the class ode committee; and on the board of The Tiger, where many of his contributions appeared. He was also a member of Tower.
Walt graduated with honors in English and spent two years as a teacher at Valley Ranch School in Wyoming, returning to Princeton to study writing and to coach swimming. His short stories were published in the Saturday Evening Post and in other popular magazines.
In WWII, Walt served as a lieutenant in the navy in Perth, Australia. After the war, he came to Philadelphia to work as a copywriter with N. W. Ayer until he retired in 1969. Even after retiring, he continued to play squash and to spend summers at East Chop on Martha's Vineyard, where he belonged to the East Chop Tennis Club and was president of the Beach Club.
Walt is survived by his widow, Janet Smith; a daughter, Barbara; and a son, William.
