Walter McClymonds Maitland ’36

Walt died on Feb. 11, 1989, at Hilton Head, S.C., after a brief illness. He was born in N.Y.C. on Apr. 25, 1912.

He prepared at Choate and the Hun School. At Princeton, he majored in architecture, was on the boxing team, and was a member of Court Club. He also received a degree in civil engineering from Columbia Univ. Walt was a community planner and consultant. He also was a rancher in Drake, Colo., where he raised Angus cattle.

His greatest hobby was golf. He was considered an excellent senior amateur golfer, won many awards, and played out of Hilton Head, where he had a second home. He served the Boy Scouts of America and was on the U.S. Forest Service Advisory Board. He also collected art and enjoyed tennis and skiing.

Walt is survived by his widow, Ruth Zelma Vollmer, whom he married in 1946, sons James W. and Thomas M., daughters Jo Geltner and Susan Rubin, and five grandchildren. We will miss this man of many skills.
