Walter Russell Sparks ’40
BRIGANIINE, NJ, RESIDENT Walt Sparks died June 30, 1992, at Atlantic City Hospital, after suffering a heart attack on the gulf Course. Classmate Bill Pugh attended his services. Fran formerly lived in Berwyn, Penn., grew up in Wynnewood, and attended Lower Merion H.S.
At Princeton, Walt majored in economics and was a member of Cloister Inn. He served in the U.S. Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters, retiring from the Naval Reserve with the rank of commander. After obtaining a law degree from the Univ. of Pennsylvania,
Walt worked for the Fidelity Bank. He then went on to 25 years as a lawyer for the insurance Company of North America, commencing as claims supervisor, then as an underwriter, and ultimately as head of the filing department and regulatory compliance section. During this period he worked closely with Bill Pugh, who was responsible for much of the company's legal activities. According to Bill, "Walt was extremely able and efficient ... and I don't ever recall we had a difference," In 1978, at the time of his retirement, Walt was in a ,Senior position, as secretary of the corporation.
In Brigantine, Walt was known for his landscaping talents and as an ardent golfer. His sons Walter R. and Craig F. and two grandsons survive him. To them all the Class of 1940 extends its sympathy.
