Walter Thaw Stockton ’17

Body

WALTER STOCKTON died at the Evanston Hospital on Dec. 3, 1989, after failing slowly over several months. He was born in Chicago, Ill., on Feb. 15, 1895, and in 1896 he moved to Evanston, Ill., where he has lived since then. He attended Evanston High School. His grandfather was General Joseph Stockton, after whom Stockton Drive and Stockton School in Chicago were named. At Princeton he roomed for four years with J. F. Singleton. He was a member of Tower Cub and of the Mandolin and Banjo Cubs. He planned to be an architect.

In WWI he was rejected by the Army because of a physical disability, and he joined the Illinois Reserve Militia where he was a captain. After the war he joined the architectural firm of Robert S. DeGolyer & Co. in Chicago where he was secretary and treasurer. The firm did both private homes and large buildings. He continued the practice of architecture in Chicago for 50 years.

He was trustee and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston, past commodore and architect of the Sheridan Shore Yacht Cub, secretary of the Evanston Country Cub and the Evanston Historical Society, director of the Evanston Art Center, and a member of the American Institute of Architects. "Stick" had a delightful sense of humor which he kept to the very end. It was always a pleasure to have him at our major reunions. We send our deep sympathy to his widow, Ernestine, his son, Richard, his daughter, Catherine Chandler, and his three grandchildren.
