William Arthur Carlile ’36
BILL, LONGTIME resident of Columbus, Ohio, died Mar. 1, 1993, after a long illness.
He prepared at Columbus Academy and the Hun School. At Princeton, he majored in economics and was V.P. of Quadrangle Club. He won his numerals in football and 150lb. crew and was chairman of THE DAILY PRINCETONIAN, Undergraduate Council, juniorSenior Prom committee, and Honor Committee. He served as Class president senior year and for the first five years after graduation.
Bill started his business career with the Columbus Bolt and Forging Company, which later became the Metal Forge Company. He rose to be president, then chairman, and retired in 1979. He gave of his many talents to several organizations over many years. He was chairman of Columbus Academy, the Columbus School for Girls, and his Presbyterian church; was president of a national trade organization, V.P. of the Ohio Manufacturers Assn., and president of a 700bed hospital; and was on the boards of a bank, insurance company, and utility company.
He is survived by his widow, Mary Tarbell Carlile, whom he married in 1939; sons Robert H. '64 and William H. '73; daughters Cynthia C. Bashore and Molly C. Gordon; and three grandchildren.
We will miss this friendly and talented loyal Princetonian and classmate. He was one of the greats of our Class.
