William B. Hewson Jr. ’57

Bill died Sept. 29, 2011, in Naples, Fla., after a lengthy illness.

Born July 29, 1935, in Long Branch, N.J., he grew up in East Williston, N.Y., and prepared at Kent School.

At Princeton, Bill was on the WPRU advertising board, served as hockey manager, competed on the Rugby Club, and was a member of Colonial Club. His sophomore-year roommates were Tony Abbott and Mike Turnure. Following military service in Korea and advertising work, Bill returned to Princeton and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1960.

Bill spent most of his career in advertising with Benton & Bowles and Cunningham & Walsh and as a marketing director of National Distillers. Home over the years included New York City, Princeton, and Darien, Conn.

Surviving are his wife, Helshi, whom he married in 1981; four siblings; six children; his former wife, Nan; and 10 grandchildren. He loved music, science fiction, the beach, and the Giants and Mets. We will recall Bill’s intelligence, humor, and love of family.

Bill’s Princeton heritage included his father, William ’33; stepfathers Austin C. Starkey ’26 and George Cook ’26; siblings Barbara Hewson ’73, Jane Hewson ’77, and Austin C. Starkey Jr. ’73, and his son, Charles W. ’04.

To his devoted wife Helshi and children Bill, Andy, Liz, Bert, Tory, and Charlie, the class sends its condolences.
