William Donald Melosh ’46

Body

BILL DIED at his home in Upper Montclair, N.J., on May 9, 1989, after a prolonged illness.

Bill joined us in the summer of 1942 from Ridgewood High School. He subsequently entered the V-12 Program and graduated in 1946. He attended New York Medical College and then served his internship at St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City. Here he fell in love with a lovely nurse, Gurlie Johnson, and they were married.

Bill was on the staff of Mountainside Hospital in Upper Montclair and, until he retired four years ago, had a practice in obstetrics and gynecology. During these later years, he continued his lifelong hobby of stamp collecting and basked in the joy of being a doting grandfather.

For 16 years, Bill was on a dialysis machine in his home. He bore this burden with stoicism, and if courage be grace under pressure, Bill's life was indeed a "profile in courage." The class joins Gurlie, their daughter Barbara, sons Bruce and Bill, and Bill's brother, Henry '45, in both their sorrow and great pride.
