Bill died Aug. 28, 2020, in Lakewood, Calif., at the age of 86, after a short illness following a fractured hip.

Born May 7, 1934, in Orange, N.J., Bill grew up in Maplewood, N.J. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Rutgers in 1956, a master’s degree in mathematics from Rutgers in 1958, and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Princeton in 1966. He was a mathematics instructor at Washington College and Bradley University prior to joining the mathematics faculty of California State University, Dominguez Hills, in 1969. He retired as a full professor in 1999.

Bill primarily taught high-level math classes, where his love for teaching and his passion for math nurtured and inspired his students. He was active in the Academic Senate during his career and continued to serve in leadership positions as an emeritus professor until 2015. He was the founding donor of the Archimedes Prize contest held by the Cal State mathematics department annually since 2004.

Bill was predeceased by his brother Ansel ’52 *57 and sister-in-law Betty Gould. He was survived by his wife, Sallie Adelle Drane-Bosch; his niece Debbie Gould Pederson ’79 and her children Peter, Kenneth, Matthew, and Jennifer; and nephew Robert Gould.
