William Elihu Blackman ’49

Body

BILL BLACKMAN PASSED away May 17, 1993, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, N.J., following open heart surgery. A lifelong resident of Trenton, Bill graduated from Trenton Central H.S. in 1941 and joined the air corps, where, as a lieutenant, he was a pilot instructor for the Southeast Training Command. At Princeton, he majored in psychology and was a member of the flying club and WhigClio.

Bill married Ruth Critchlow in June of 1948. After leaving Princeton, he became a manager of food concessions for Harry M. Stevens, Inc., a food catering firm. He worked for the company until his retirement in 1978, following a heart attack. He had held responsibility for concessions at the Garden State, Atlantic City, Monmouth, and Liberty Bell racetracks, as well as at other sporting events, and welcomed the challenge of seeing that the crowds enjoyed the food and service. Coupling his love of flying with an avid interest in skiing, Bill often flew a private plane with Ellen to favorite ski resorts. He maintained an active interest in Princeton sports activities, and was a seasonticket holder for Princeton basketball games.

Bill was a member of the board of directors of the Trenton Club, and a member of the Trenton Historical Society and the Trenton Country Club. He is survived by his widow and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Our hearts go out to all of them at the loss of this fine man.
