Bill Clarkson died Aug. 22, 1994, of cancer at his retirement home in Fearrington Village, N.C. A native of Pittsburgh, he attended Ridley College in Ontario and joined us from St. Paul's School, where he won the hockey and track medals. A varsity hockey player freshman year, his biggest game was a hat trick sophomore year against Harvard. He was a member of Ivy Club and majored in economics. After N.R.O.T.C., he served in the marine corps as an executive officer of C Company Engineers in Korea.

After eight years with Jones & Laughlin Steel in Pittsburgh, Detroit. and Memphis, he moved to N.Y.C. and went into banking. He married Mary Ann Robinson in 1963, then joined the Waterbury (Conn.) Natl. Bank. In l972, he joined State Natl. Bank, which after mergers and a failure, became part of Fleet. He developed expertise in I.R.A. rollovers and had customers across the country. When he retired, in 1993, his accounts totaled over a billion dollars.

He was active with many Waterbury institutions, including Red Cross, United Fund, Family Service, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

In addition to Mary Ann, Bill leaves three daughters, Sara, Margaret, and Catherine; a namesake grandson, William A. Howson; two sisters, Sally Behr and Peggy Chapin; and eight nieces and nephews, who adored their Uncle Willie. To all of them, the class extends its deepest sympathy. We too will miss his cheerful and familiar face at future minis.
