William F. Hewitt ’35
BILL DIED Nov. 13, 1991, in Whittier, Calif. He came to Princeton from Hyde Park High School in Chicago and received an A.B. degree in biology. Bill then attended the Univ. of Chicago, where he earned M.Sc.and Ph.D. degrees in physiology in 1937 and 1942, respectively.
Bill taught in osteopathic medical colleges in Los Angeles and Des Moines, as well as at the Univ. of Wichita, Howard Univ., and at Northern Univ. He also worked for SmithKline and French, Mead Johnson and Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals, retiring in 1977: Bill then moved to California and started another career. He and his wife, Jerene, became partners in a family enterprise, Words, Inc., engaging in consulting, editing, and publishing. Bill was also active in the American Medical Writers Assn., serving on their faculty since 1974. He was awarded their fellowship award. Bill was a certified sexologist and was a volunteer supervisor and trainer at the Los Angeles Sex Help Line.
In 1986, Bill and Jerene endowed the Academy of American Poets Prize at Princeton. This prize is awarded annually to the student submitting the best original poem. In our 50th reunion book Bill wrote, "I hope I'm repaying part of what I owe Princeton by passing on to others, as best I can, what I've learned."
The Class of 1935 extends its deepest sympathy to Jerene; Bill's four daughters, Alice, Meredith, Rosalie and Willa; three sons, Alan, Scott and Mike; 13 grandchildren; and his two greatgrandchildren.
