William F. Mathieson ’44

Body

Bill Mathieson died of a heart attack Aug. 14, 1994, at his home in Pittsfield, Mass. He came to us from Hill School and freshman year, be roomed with Bill Woods. At Princeton, he majored in Modern languages and literature, was assistant manager of lacrosse, and belonged to Elm Club. Bill left Princeton in 1942 for the Army and, after specialized training, spent his last two years in combat in Europe, primarily Germany and Italy. Discharged as a sergeant, he returned to Princeton, married Susan Prager in 1946, and received his A.B. in 1947. He then began a career in the garment industry when he joined J.C. Penney in N.Y.C. as a buyer. He later formed his own company, Format Products, and finally became a consultant, capitalizing on his recognized expertise in the industry.

Throughout most of his life, he lived in Bronxville, N.Y. After retirement, he moved to Pittsfield, where he continued to devote his time and energy to his greatest interest, his family. He and Susan, who predeceased him in 1988, had six children: William, Randall '71, Garrett, Laurie, Wendy, and Lisa; and seven grandchildren, to whom the class extends its sympathy.
