William Francis Young ’30

Body

Bill Young died unexpectedly on May 23, 1989, at his home in Rancho Bernardo, San Diego, Calif. He and his wife, Gertrude, and their family lived in Ridgewood, N.J., until 1976, when they discovered the delightful climatic attractions of Southern California. Bill attended Ridge¬wood High School and Princeton Preparatory School before he entered Princeton, where he swam on the varsity swimming team and managed it during senior year. He roomed with C. Marshall Barton and was presi¬dent of Elm Club.

After graduating from Columbia Law School in 1933, Bill served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York. In 1941, he joined the law dept. at New York Life Insurance Co. He remained with the com¬pany in various positions for 32 years and served as cor¬porate secretary from 1957 until he retired in 1973. His extracurricular interests and energies were largely de¬voted to fund-raising. He was deeply involved, as a direc¬tor or trustee, with the National Medical Fellowships, the Independent College Funds of America, the National Better Business Bureau, the National Container Corp., the National Information Bureau, and the National Council on Philanthropy.

Bill had no brothers, and his only sister predeceased him. In 1941, he married Gertrude Tetorin, who survives him, as do their daughter, Mary Ellen Young (of Toronto), and their son, William G. (of L.A.). To them we express our sincere sympathy.
