William G. Lewis ’34

Body

BILL "KAYO" LEWIS, a retired v.p. of Campbell Soup Co., died unexpectedly of a heart attack, May 15, 1994, less than three weeks before he was to take office at our 60th reunion as the class's v.p.

Kayo's wife, Helen (Kirk), a Wellesley alumna whom he married in 1940, died in 1985. After that, he moved to a retirement community near Wilmington, Del., and became increasingly active in class affairs. In 1988 and 1992, he helped run our mini-reunions at Water's Edge, in Connecticut, in conjunction with Yale football games in New Haven. He was also active in the affairs of his prep school, Pingry, and he joined his old friend Lank Seibert at a Pingry alumni party shortly before his death.

Kayo enjoyed telling friends how he acquired his nickname. As a young man at a summer camp, he inadvertently became a participant in an exhibition-boxing match and was kayoed 23 seconds into the first round.

Surviving are his two daughters, Phoebe Sabas and Susanna Ferry, and two grandchildren. A brother, David F. '29, died in 1971.
