William G. Marr ’38

Bill Marr, a respected Baltimore ophthalmologist, died Feb. 10, 1995, at his home in Green Spring Valley, Md. A graduate of Gilman School, he majored in biology with honors, joined Colonial Club, rowed on the j.v. crew, and participated in single and quad sculling.

He earned his M.D. at Johns Hopkins in 1942, and after a year's residency at Wilmer Eye Institute, entered the Army. He served as battalion surgeon of the 63rd Infantry of the 6th Division in New Guinea and the Philippines, He was awarded three Bronze Stars for bravery. In 1946, he resumed his residency and in 1949, opened his practice. He was on the staff of Johns Hopkins Hospital and continued to teach at Wilmer. He played tennis regularly and enjoyed fox hunting and skiing. Parkinson's disease compelled early retirement in 1983.

Bill is remembered by classmates and others for his compassionate and gentle manner, his good-natured humor, and his devotion to family. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Washington Speer; sons William C. and J. Stewart Marr '67; daughter Adele Marr Mitchell; and eight grandchildren. We join them in their sorrow.
