William Gerald McLoughlin Jr. ’44
BILL DIED Jan. 4, 1993. He came to us from Columbia H.S. in Maplewood, N.J., where he headed the school paper and was president of the dramatic club. He continued with these interests at Princeton as a member of Theatre Intime and director of scripts and commercials and announcer for WPRU. He made dean's list all three years and left in 1943 for the field artillery and combat in Europe. He served three years, separating as a first It. He graduated in June 1947, and went on to Harvard to earn his M.A. in English in 1949. He became an assistant dean there in 1950, and received his doctorate in 1953. He joined the Brown faculty in 1954 and became a full professor in 1963. As professor emeritus of religion and history, he was appointed a Chancellor's Fellow in 1992, returning from a brief retirement to fulltime teaching. Bill was an active historian, authoring 17 books and an extensive number of articles on religion, the antislavery movement, and Rhode Island. His latest book, After the Trail of Tears: The Cherokees 18391880 is due out this year. He wrote that Princeton inspired his bent for history, but he found little solace in our nation's adventures. Despite much that displeased him in national and world affairs, he maintained a fervent hope for a better world. He adored his family. We wish him peace and share with his widow, Virginia, and daughters Helen, Gail, and Martha the sorrow of his passing.
