Body

BILL CAME TO us from Columbia H.S. in Maplewood, N.J., where he headed the school paper and was president of the dramatic club. He continued these interests at Princeton as a member of Theatre Intime and director of scripts and commercials and announcer for developing WPRU. He made dean's list all three years and left in 1943 for the field artillery, where he served three years, separating as a first It. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in June 1947 and went on to Harvard.

He became an assistant dean there in 1 950, and received his doctorate in American civilization in 1953. Following a year at London Univ. as a Fulbright fellow, he joined the Brown faculty in 1954 and became full professor of history in 1963. As professor emeritus of history and religion, he was appointed the first Chancellor's fellow at Brown in 1992, and continued fulltime teaching. Bill was an active historian, authoring 18 books and an extensive number of articles on various aspects of American history, religion, and culture. His latest books, AFTER THE TRAiL OF TEARs and THE CHEROKEES AND CHRLSTIANITY, are due out in 1994. Bill served as a chairman and longtime member of the Rhode Island A.C.L.U. He wrote that Princeton inspired his bent for history, but he found little solace in our nations's adventures. Despite much that displeased him in national and world affairs, he maintained a fervent hope for a better world, He adored his family. We wish him peace and share with his widow, Virginia, and daughters Gail and Martha the sorrow of his passing.
