WILLIAM H. "BILL" AVERY died Dec. 12, 1992, at his home, in Winnetka, Ill., after a long illness. He came to Princeton from University H.S., Chicago, competed on the varsity track and soccer teams, and was business manager of the TIGER. He roomed freshman year at 15 Edwards Pl. with Dick Capps, Dave Monks, and Curtin Winsor, and later roomed with Dick Capps on campus. He was a member of Tower Club. He graduated from Harvard Law School and became a partner in and eventually chairman of Sidney & Austin, one of Chicago's largest law firms.

Bill's business and charitable activities were innumerable: president, Chicago Legal Aid Bureau; chairman, Committee on Legal Aid, American Bar Assn.; president, Chicago United Charities; president, Chicago Y.M.C.A.; trustee, Ravinia Music Festival; director, Equitable Life Insurance Company of U.S.; and director, Chicago Title and Trust Company.

Bill served as Class president from 1982 to 1987 and had been a president of the Princeton Club of Chicago.

In 1934, he married Eugenie "Jean" Petrequin, by whom he had a daughter, Nancy (Mrs. H. Paul Pressler), and two sons, Cameron and the Reverend Richard. He also is survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Bill played a leading role in fund raising for our Class of 1927 dormitory at Princeton.

The Class has lost one of its most outstanding members and extends its sympathy to his family.
