Body

BILL CHAFFEE died Aug. 4, 1992, at his home in Evergreen Woods, North Branford, Conn. He had recently moved there from Vero Beach, Fla., where he had lived since 1978.

After graduation, Bill sold life insurance, and then went to work for Philco Corp., from 1934 to 1959, except for three years of army service in WWII. At Philco he was V.P. of the refrigeration, radio, and automotive divisions, and was general manager of the last two. In 1959 he became an executive with American Standard in New York, from which he retired in 1975.

Bill served with distinction in A.A.F. Radio and Radar Section, from 1942 to 1945, rising in rank from first lieutenant to major, One of his several assignments was installing radar navigation aids for flights from India over the "hump" to China, for which he received the Legion of Merit.

In the summer of 1932, Bill married Amanda Hurlock, and in the course of their 60 years together, they were both active in school and community affairs, particularly in connection with William Penn Charter School. They also raised two children, Raleigh Anne (Mrs. Thomas R. Cox III) and William H. III, who graduated from Old Nassau in 1960. His daughter has written "Princeton was always a big part of Dad's life, and we all enjoyed sharing that with him."

To Bill's widow, children, and four grandchildren, theClass extends its deep sympathy in Our mutual loss.
