William A. Humphreys Jr. ’28

Body

Bill “Hump” Humphreys, died Jan. 25, 1995, at his home in Akron. He grew up in Chicago and prepared for college at the Hill School. He remained very active in the school's alumni affairs. At Princeton, he majored in geology and was a member of Charter Club.

After graduation, Hump went into business with the company where his father worked, N. A. Williams, an office in Chicago attached to the Akron firm Robinson Clay Products Co. During WWII, he served as a major in the Army Air Force.

After the war, in 1946, he worked for and became treasurer of the American Hostess Co. tableware manufacturer, in Akron. He retired in 1953, but remained a director of Robinson Clay Produces until 1969. He was a trustee and past president of the Akron-Canton Regional Airport Authority. Hump married Henrietta Commins Hodgson June 21, 1950. She died Mar. 6, 1986. They had two daughters, Ethel Stansfield and Henrietta, who died in 1974. There are six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Stansfield says, “The sun rose and set at ‘The Hill,’ as far as Hump was concerned, but Princeton wasn’t far behind.” Hump was the efficient secretary of the Class of 1924 at Hill. He often relayed news of his Hill and Princeton classmates. He attended all our recent major reunions and many others. He was a former president of the Princeton Club of Akron. We will miss a loyal and genial classmate, and assure Ethel of our deep sympathy.
