William J.C. Hughson ’47

Body

Bill served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and married Claire Lathy in 1947. They lived in the Harrison Street “barracks.” She attended Douglass College while he completed, and thoroughly enjoyed, his Princeton education.

Bill had a successful banking career, first with Philadelphia National Bank and then with Chicago Continental Bank. Retiring in 1989, he and Claire moved to St. Michaels on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Bill became incredibly active, serving as commander of the local power squadron, treasurer of his church, a patriotic Scot in the St. Andrew’s Society, and a trustee, and often treasurer, of many charities.

Above all, Bill truly helped to “peace together” our war-torn class. He served for many years as our Annual Giving agent, prying both big gifts and welcome news (for Ace’s column) from classmates. He organized several memorable mini-reunions. For many years he offered his dry good humor and sage advice to our class executive committee.

Despite increasingly debilitating health problems he continued to volunteer and perform other important tasks for our class — right up to his death July 3, 2010.

To Claire, his wife of 63 years; their two children; and two grandchildren, we offer this tribute to a loyal classmate who served us and countless others in countless ways.
