William A. Lazareth ’49

Body

Bill died Feb. 23, 2008, at the age of 79.

He prepared for Princeton at New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. At Princeton, he majored in history. Bill was a member of the choir, class council, Whig-Clio, Quad-

rangle Club, and the board of the Student Christian Association. He served as president of the German Club, the Wesley Society, and the Lutheran Student Association.

After graduation, Bill continued his studies in Germany and the United States, eventually earning a Ph.D. and ordination in the New York Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He served as pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in New York City.

At the time of his retirement he was bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod. He also had served as dean of the Philadelphia Lutheran Theological Seminary and as director of the Faith and Order Secretariat, World Council of Churches. In retirement he served as program director for the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton.

As best we can determine, Bill was survived by his wife, Jacqueline, who has since died. He is survived by his children, Karen, Victoria, and Paul. The class extends deepest sympathy to them on their loss of this remarkable man.
