William Logan Webb Jr. ’51
BILL DIED of cancer Dec. 14, 1993. He had been president and psychiatristinchief of the Institute of Living in Hartford since 1985. He was also professor of psychiatry at the Univ. of Connecticut School of Medicine and lecturer at the Yale School of Medicine. Before he joined the Institute, Bill was V.P. and medical director at Sheppard Pratt Hospital, Baltimore.
Born in Chattanooga, Bill earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1955. At Princeton, he was a sociology major and a member of Campus Club. He roomed with Hugh Ghormley, Bill Thomas, and Gerry Thomas and coxed the 150lb. crew.
One colleague said that Bill "literally transformed psychiatry in the Hartford area." He was active in professional organizations as chairman of the American Psychiatric Assn.'s ethics committee, chairman of the A.M.A.'s Residency Review Committee, and a director of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Bill will be remembered for his intelligence, dedication, and concern for people. He was open to new ideas and drawn to vibrant, enthusiastic people. He was very close to his family, taking pride in his children and in his wife Grace's work at the Institute's school. One of his most satisfying moments came when he dedicated the Grace S. Webb School.
Our sympathy goes to Grace, sons Charles '83 and William 111, and daughters Elizabeth, Catherine, and Sarah.
