William M. Collins ’27
BILL DIED on Dec. 19, 1989, after a long illness. His career seems to be illuminated by the first line of a hymn that he probably sang in his beloved Episcopal church: "Where cross the crowded ways of life." An early ambition was to enjoy a bright legal career, and he earned the L.L.B. degree at Northwestern Univ. But his family's diverse business interests made the decision, and he became known in Chicago's corporate world as president or director of companies, beginning with Philip Henrici, a family restaurant enterprise, Add Inland Rubber Corp., Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, John B. Thompson, Control Instrument and Butler Brothers. It all added up to one of '27's listings in WHO'S WHO.
Life included a lot of interests probably more entertaining than directors' sessions, such as serving the Chicago Orchestral Assn., the Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital, Masters School at Dobbs Ferry, and Chicago's Zoological Society and Girls Latin School: a record of service longer then most of us can claim. He was also active in clubs, his photo hobby, riding, golf, and travel to many places others enjoy through lectures or in a favorite armchair: the Middle East, Israel, Lebanon, Baltic cities, Jamaica, Mexico and Guatemala.
The Class sends sympathetic greetings to Bill's wife, who informed the secretary of his death, writing from Libertyville, Ill., P.O. Box 194—60048, Also to his daughters: Kathleen, Deborah (Mrs. Robert O. Duff Jr.), and Mrs. Judy C. Hannistad.
