William M. Sloan ’38

Body

BILL SLOAN DIED in Providence, R.I., June 14, 1994. Born in N.Y.C., he graduated from Groton School. At Princeton, he was a member of Terrace Club, majored in history, and graduated with honors.

After getting his LL.B. at Yale Law and a year in practice, he served in Panama in Army artillery until 1945. He then moved to Providence, where he joined Tillinghast, Collins and Tanner; he worked there for his entire career.

Bill was an ardent golfer and was interested in travel. He was an accomplished poet and many classmates have received copies of his Christmas poems. He served on many boards of charitable organizations, especially the local Y.M.C.A. and the Providence Preservation Society, and held positions of responsibility in his Episcopal Church and his state Council of Churches.

He is survived by two sons, William M. Jr. '64 and Stephen; seven grandchildren, including William M. 3rd '94; and his first wife, Margaret Treadway, from whom he was divorced in 1972. Children Margaret M. and Jonathan T. and his second wife, Frances, predeceased him. His family has our sincere sympathy.
