William McMillan ’28
BILL McMILLAN DIED of cancer at his home on Sunny Hill Farm in Glyndon, Md., on Mar. 22, 1994. He went to St. George School in Newport, R.I., and earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture from Princeton in 1928 and 1931. At Princeton, he also rowed on the lightweight crew and was a member of Quadrangle Club.
He established his own architectural firm in Baltimore and retired in 1965. He was responsible for saving the dome of the old administration building of Johns Hopkins Hospital from demolition. It was placed on the Natl. Register of Historic Places. He designed country residences, the chapel at Garrison Forest School, and the president's home at Johns Hopkins Univ.
Bill was a well-known yachtsman, who raced his 59-foot schooner, Water Gypsy, in many ocean races, including one across the North Atlantic to England in 1931. He was in the navy during WWII and was an intelligence officer in the Pacific on the battle ships Alabama and South Dakota. He was discharged with the rank of commander in 1946.
Bill married Grace G. Roosevelt, granddaughter of Theodore Roosevelt, on Mar. 3, 1934. She died in Feb. 1994. He is survived by a son, William Jr. '57; a daughter, Eleanor; and three grandchildren, including Eleanor W. '92. Bill attended our 50th reunion. We will miss a classmate who was a distinguished artist, sailor, gentleman, and friend.
