William Mitchell Lamotte ’61

Born in Philadelphia and raised in Wilmington, Del., Mitch was the son, nephew, and brother of Princetonians, and came to Princeton from Tower Hill School. He majored in politics, was a member of Tiger Inn and Whig-Clio, and sailed. He roomed with Chris Perry, Ted Kurz, Cliff Henry, Alex Ley, Fritz Korth, and, freshman year, Alex Wojciechowicz, and Ross Sherbrooke ’58.

Mitch’s New York Times’ obituary described him as a “lifelong sailor, ardent sportsman, and successful business leader” — and he was all of those. He spent his entire career in the insurance industry, first with Chubb, then with Johnson & Higgins for 30 years — the last 15 of which he was chief of the Chicago office and member of the parent company’s board. His volunteer commitments were many, including Lincoln Park Zoological Society, the Boys & Girls Clubs, and the Hadley School for the Blind.

Mitch is survived by Betsy, his wife of nearly 47 years; a son, Bolt; daughters Anne and Nicole; four grandchildren; and his brother, Nicholas. With them, we mourn the loss of our classmate.
