William Procter Matthews Jr. ’42

Body

BILL MATTHEWS died on Nov. 18, 1989, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, his home for the past 23 years. At the time of his death, Bill was secretary-general of C.I.S.V., an organization dedicated to promoting world peace by bringing children together from different countries. He had been executive director of C.I.S.V. in the U.S. for 10 years, starting in 1956.

Bill was a great-great-grandson of William Procter, co-founder of the Procter & Gamble Co., and a great-grandson of Judge Stanley Matthews, one of the early founders and mayors of Glendale, Ohio, and a U.S. Supreme Court justice.

Bill came to Princeton from Loomis and left after a short time, ultimately graduating from Iowa State Univ. Subsequently, he served in the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer during WWII.

One of Bill's colleagues and friends commented, "What I really liked about Bill was that he was very dedicated to the organization (C.I.S.V.), and that he went to England, not for the money, but because he believed in the organization."

The Class extends its sympathies to his widow, Mary; his mother, Janet W. Matthews; his son, William P. Matthews III; his daughter, Susan E.; his brother, Donald R.; and his brother, Harry.
