William Rogers Diver Jr. ’41
BILL DIVER died Mar. 11, 1993, in Rockford, Ill., where he had moved from Stuart, Fla. His wife, Mary Elizabeth, had passed away a year earlier.
Bill came to Princeton from Montclair Academy, majored in chemical engineering, ran track, and won his "P" on the 150pound football squad. Bob Brightman was his roommate. During the war, Bill worked for DuPont on military explosives; he then worked with the Atomic Energy Commission in Hanford, Wash, Before his retirement to Stuart in 1982, he owned the Turf Aid Company in Memphis. His first marriage, to Betty Moser, ended in divorce, leaving two daughters: Dorothy Singer and Maryl Spence. There are six grandchildren.
One of Bill's college loves was contract bridge ... for high stakes. One memorable deal found him with a hand blessed by four acekings. Bill's opening three notrump bid was passed out. As fate would have it, Brightman laid down a pristine yarborough dummy, and Bill took precisely eight tricks. But, with the mature good grace that characterized everything he did, Bill laughed and marveled with the others at the vagaries of random deals. We mourn his passing.
