William S. White ’44

Body

Known as Whizzer while an undergraduate, Bill died May 22, 1992, after a year-long struggle with cancer and a stroke. Bill came to Princeton from Niles, Mich., and Exeter. At college he roomed with Bob Futoran and Hunter Craig and was a member of Tiger Inn.

Following two years in the army in the E.T.O. and Japan, Bill went to Michigan Law School. After getting his degree, he spent his entire career in his hometown of Niles. Highly respected as a circuit judge and a mentor to hundreds of young lawyers, he served on the boards of a local bank and the Boy Scouts; was active in the county Republican party (serving as its treasurer); was president of the library board; and was a lay reader and warden in the Episcopal church.

While he loved the law, Bill and his family spent cherished time together in a summer home in St. Joseph, Mich., on Walloon Lake. An avid fisher, golfer, and tennis buff, he regaled his friends with good stories and was much in demand as an emcee and after-dinner speaker until he lost his voice through cancer.

To his widow, Anne; his children, Stuart, Stanley, Mary, and Michael; three granddaughters; and one great-grandchild; the class extends its sympathy.
