William W. Cochran ’29
BILL DIED May 2, 1994, in Allendale, N.J., where he had lived for two years after a long residence in Convent, N.J. He was born in China, son of Samuel Cochran '93, a medical missionary, who later became the physician of Lawrenceville School. Bill prepared at Hotchkiss. At Princeton, he was a miler and played soccer and lacrosse, and was in the Glee Club and Triangle. He roomed with Sam Perry and belonged to Cap & Gown (of which his father had been the first president).
Upon graduation, he joined the brokerage firm of Dominick & Dominick, then went to American Insurance in 1938. When he retired, he was president of Reinsurance Co. of New York. He was on the board of the Howard Savings Institution and the Trust Co. of Morris County. His clubs included the Downtown Assn. of New York, the Pine Valley Golf Club, the Morris County Golf Club, and the St. Andrews Society. During the war, Bill was in the army air force, retiring as lt. colonel after service in India as finance officer of the Air Transport Command, ferrying supplies over the Hump.
In 1930, Bill married Mary Willis "Poolie" Vanderpool, who died in 1992. Bill's Princeton connections include his father, his father-in-law, and many in-laws and cousins, including our own Jim. Bill is survived by his son, William W. Jr., and two daughters, Cornelia C. Daley w'50 and Lois C. Marshall. The class extends its sympathy to Bill's family.
